6/18 NOLA Photos

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Our first pool party pretty much ruled. Air mattress crowd surfing, sweaty and scantily clad bodies all packed in the new courtyard dancefloor and pool deck. Looking forward to doing it again JULY 9th in Baton Rouge and July 23rd w/ LA RIOTS in New Orleans. Get all the PHOTOS.

TKVR Guide to Summer Survival

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The temperature is rising quickly in NOLA and surviving the annual ordeal without melting onto the sidewalk is definitely a challenge, but we’ve got some tested tips to make sure you make it through the summer season unscathed.

Over the past couple weeks TKVR has been scouting out potential cool down locations across the city. Public pools in New Orleans open June 6th. Here’s some spots to check out:

1. Whitney Young Pool | 6500 Magazine St

Nestled among some greenery in Audubon Park, many haven’t even noticed this free public pool uptown. Like most of the New Orleans pools hours are pretty limited but enjoy a lap lane and extended hours until 6PM or so every friday. Although TKVR would never condone sneaking into a public pool, the fences aren’t pointy and security is usually too lazy to venture far enough from their golf carts to worry about the goings on at Whitney Young after midnight…

2. Best Western | St. Charles & Poydras

Best Western isn’t the easiest hotel pool to sneak into, but the perks are worth it if you’re tenacious enough to pass through two levels of security. First you need a keycard to enter the elevators. Chill at one of the tables across from the elevators in the lobby until a group makes their way onto the elevators. Stowaway to the top floor and make your way to the pool door. No easy way here, keycards needed again so knock loudly until someone lets you in or mill about by the towels until another guest comes to the pool. Best part of this hotel, chill all day by the pool and then enjoy the free daily buffet in the lobby from 5-6PM.

3. Maison Dupuy | 1001 Toulouse

Waltz into to this courtyard pool area like you own the place. No security, and not even a lobby stand in the way of this French Quarter paradise. Only drawbacks are the limited hours of sun and generally full deck so snagging chairs can be a hassle.

4. Omni Royal Hotel | 621 Saint Louis St

Omni Royal Hotel offers relatively entry to a luxurious pool deck with great sun exposure and a cash bar. Only problem is keycard entry at the pool, but you should be able to casually yell to someone on the deck if no one comes in or out in a couple minutes. Stop by United Apparel Liquidators (UAL) at 518 Chartres Street and pick up a cheap suit to show off that beach body you’ve been working on all spring.

5. Roosevelt Hotel | 123 Baronne St

With ease of entry comparable to Omni Royal, hit up this relaxed roof when you want to avoid the crowds. Snag a Wall Street Journal from in front of one of the rooms on the way and pretend like you give a shit about your future.

Eat & Drink

1. Cajun Seafood | 1479 N Clairborne

Summer not hot enough for you already? See if you can make it through 5 pounds of spicy crawfish at Cajun Seafood on Clairborne. Tons of great seafood at a reasonable price and a friendly staff at this unassuming business right next to the highway.

2. New Orleans Original Daiquiris | Riverwalk Mall

Visit TKVR doorman Sugar Shane manning one of two Riverwalk Mall locations. The daiquiris are good but the people watching is great. I’m a sucker for the dreamsicle but go ahead and try the 151 or the suicide(everything mixed) if you’re feeling frisky. Hook Shane up with a tip and just might upsize your Daq or beer.

3. Satsuma | 3218 Dauphine

Stop by Satsuma for their killer selection of fresh squeezed juices and unstoppable breakfast items. Everything is fresh to order at this bywater sanctuary open late into the afternoon. Try some of their pesto on a breakfast sandwich, you won’t be disappointed.

4. Il Posto | 4607 Dryades

Located in a quiet uptown neighborhood, Il Posto offers great breakfast and lunch items. The tomato basil soup is always good and they’ve got a great selection of made to order sandwiches. I live walking distance away which is great when I want free coffee refills and free internet. The staff couldn’t be friendlier and there’s usually assorted samples for you to try.

5. The Joint | 801 Poland Ave

New Orleans isn’t exactly known for their BBQ, but The Joint located right at the Southeastern corner of the bywater hits the nail on the head. Try some of their slow cooked briscuit and pulled pork straight from their huge smoker sitting in the backyard. Also make sure and check out their signature vinegar BBQ sauce and don’t miss the macaroni side.

6. Bacchanal | 600 Poland Ave

Don’t know shit about wine? Trying to impress your date on a budget? Bacchanal is your answer. A quaint wine shop located only a block or two from the Joint, you can’t strike out with their small but well curated wine selection. Then step into the courtyard for live music and small plates prepared by Tuesday thru Saturday by Chef Joaquin Rodas and stop by sunday for guest chefs.

7. Dat Dog | 5031 Freret

One of uptown’s newest food ventures, Dat Dog has been serving up gourmet dogs and sausages for a couple months now. Aside from the standard high quality beef dogs you’ll find crawfish and alligator sausage along with some unconventional toppings. Stop by and you might just be lucky enough to run into our own DS@STR manning the grill, he can suggest some signature pairings. The fries ain’t bad either.

8. Handsome Willy’s | 218 S Robertson

This downtown watering hole frequented by a mix of medical workers and New Orleans original characters fit for a chapter of Confederacy of Dunces sits in the middle of an unassuming parking lot a block off of Clairborne. Stop by on Friday for free food and a mix of soul and hip hop.

See & Be Seen
Watch the TKVR Midsummer Meltdown Trailer:

1. Dillon Francis | The Saint | June 7

Top producers rarely get the chance to play New Orleans, don’t miss future moohmbaton superstar Dillon Francis performing at The Saint on Wednesday. I managed to catch a set in Miami this year and was immediately impressed. Really looking forward to this one.

2. Prytania Theatre | 5339 Prytania

This single screen theatre has been a staple for uptown moviegoers for decades. Showing mainstream features throughout the week, Prytania also screens classic movies at noon and cult classics at midnite on Fridays and Saturdays. DJ Soul Sister will be showing Prince’s Purple Rain July 8th & 9th. Event is all ages and BYOB, sure to be another right on party situation.

3. TKVR | 1100 Tulane Ave | June 18

Electronic Takeover returns Saturday JUNE 18th for a courtyard pool party downtown. You heard right, we’re installing a pool and a deck for the entire summer and kicking off the event with a little VIP pre-party/kegger on the afternoon of the party. You already know how we get down and its been 3 months since our last party so we’re itching to get rowdy once again. RSVP RSVP RSVP.

4. James McMurtry | One Eyed Jacks | June 24

TKVR is back in Baton Rouge Saturday JULY 9th after a super successful first party there in April. Rage with us at the Spanish Moon, capacity is limited so buying presale is definitely encouraged. No pool but we still want to see you in your swimwear! RSVP RSVP RSVP.

Assuming the world doesn’t end before JAN 29th, it’s looking like we’re good to go for next ELECTRONIC TAKEOVER. I think our theme is ‘preparedness’. We’re bringing in heaters, pressure straps for the speakers, additional LEDs and a big fucking TENT. There will be free water as always. Our homie E-MARCE is coming in from Boston’s “THROWED” party and AQUAFORCE will be making their TKVR debut as well. Looking forward to seeing you, as always please leave comments and suggestions.
